Jonathan Slater joined the MOD as Director General, Transformation and Corporate Strategy in July 2011. His primary responsibilities are implementing the radical reform of the Ministry of Defence, and managing the portfolio of programmes arising from the 2010 Strategic Defence & Security Review, from downsizing to rebasing to decommissioning. He is also the Top Level Budget Holder for the Ministry’s Head Office & Corporate Services.
Jonathan arrived from the Ministry of Justice, where he led the department-wide Transforming Justice programme and the Ministry’s strategy, HR, estates and communications functions as a member of the Board. The Institute for Government’s independent evaluation of Transforming Justice highlighted ‘notable successes in bringing about change’, ‘a coherent, overarching strategy’, and ‘strengthening and deepening the leadership coalition’.
Previously, Jonathan was Chief Executive of the Office for Criminal Justice Reform, and Director of Performance & Improvement of the National Offender Management Service.
Before that, Jonathan was a Director in the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit, leading its work on NHS reform, and setting up the Whitehall capability review programme. Before joining the Civil Service in 2001, Jonathan was a local authority Deputy Chief Executive.
